This Was A First For Me…

12 comments | Share

I swear, I was minding my own business.  I had just finished a race with my boys and was eating a piece of pizza and laughing with Christy and the kids, when a voice spoke behind me.  “Love your books.” Now, put this in context. I don’t really see myself as a public figure.  I thought it was probably somebody I knew toying with me…

I turned around and this lady’s looking at me that I’ve never seen.  “Really? Thanks.” I know, it’s not too impressive but I had a mouthful of pizza.  So, then these other women start walking up.  Nodding.  Talking about my books.  Turns out they’re a book club, read a couple of mine. So, the first lady says, “Will you sign my race number?” I swallowed.  “Are you serious?” She nodded.  I shrugged. “Okay.” I looked at Christy, “Here Honey, hold my pizza.” So, I signed this kind lady’s race number while the rest of the book club looked on.  I said, “I’ve signed a lot of books, but that’s a first for me. Come on, gather round let Christy take our picture.  This may never happen again.  I’m blogging about this.” So, here’s a picture of the book club that ran the race with us yesterday.  If you look real close at the blond-haired lady’s race number, you’ll see my illegible signature.  Oh, and the guy is Bill.  Friend of mine.  He was in charge of the race.  If and when you read Mountain, you’ll discover that I went to the High Uintas in Utah for a research trip.  Bill went with me.  Makes a mean cup of coffee.  He’s pretty good with a bow-drill, too.

Oh, You are soooo famous : ) Does Christy pat you on the back or roll her eyes?  Oh, who am I kidding, I’d have you sign one of my kids if that’s all I had available.

Keep up the good work and Please don’t let it go to your head!  Looking forward to June!

WOW!  Loved the picture. Stay humble ~ and our Lord will continue to bless all of your great works. Hopefully, you will come to the Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet, Pawley’s Island area. Would love to have you sign one of my books. God Bless You and your family.

Mr. Martin...I am the lady that approached you at the race.  I just wanted to clarify a couple of points and really do appreciate your humility.  A couple of years back I read “When Crickets Cry”.  You had me at hello (nope that’s a movie).  Anyway our book club read it and then you came out to our neighborhood and we had a dinner and a question and answer with you.  We then proceeded to read all of your books and loved them.  I am looking forward to your new book as well.

Anyway we saw you at the beginning of the race but my friends said not to bother you.  I had four miles to think that over and decided otherwise.  You see I am not a shy person and believe that when life provides opportunities you should make the most of them, they may never come again.  It was a real treat meeting you and thank you for the autograph.  I loved meeting your wife and children it makes you that much more real in the readers eye.  I pray that God continues to bless your work you have a real gift.  Keep using that gift to his glory.  Happy running!!!

    Mr. Martin,
Don’t let my running friends fool you...they think you’re hot!!!  You are blessed to have a wife that is such a trooper when a group of women approach you to sign their race number and then volunteers to take the picture.  I look forward to reading your books as well.  Also, kudos to your son for placing in the race!

Congrats on your run and on being a ‘bookclub author’ for these women.

I found your blog recently because someone mentioned your books - I actually think the someone said they were your cousin’s brother’s uncle’s sister or something like that :)

And today I was happy to see UPS stop at my drive and bring me “Where the River Ends.” I won the book from a blog book giveaway at ... http://duane-scott.net/book-drawing-where-the-river-ends-by-charles-martin/

    Looking forward to reading it!

I just happened to get Chasing Fireflies at the library and was wowed by it.  I have since read The Dead Don’t Dance and Maggie.  I love them.  I love John Grisham books and you write so much like him.  I am telling all my friends to get your books.  And I am kind of old and can read them without being embarrassed and still you put your words into such human and real terms.  I’m going to get the rest of your books today and will look forward to your new one.  C

Look forward to your signing at GJ Ford Bookstore in Saint Simons in July. My first opportunity to meet you was at the same facility.  You were very kind in taking the time to share information to an old writer.

Just wanted you to know how much your books bless me!!!  I belong to a book club made up of 10 girls from church.  We meet once a month to discuss and eat (of course!!!!) For the last four years, we have had one of your books on our reading list.  I have loved them all ...can’t even choose a favorite!!!  There are always such spiritual truths buried amidst the story.  May God continue to bless you and your family.  Can’t wait to read your new one.....

I’ve enjoyed all your books soooooooooo much and wonder if and when they will come out in audio. My dad is legally blind and spends his time listening to books. Would be great if he could listen to all your books. he gets some from a place that sends to blind people and the library.
