Review on ‘The Mountain Between Us’
Posted in Press Reviews on Tue, June 08, 2010
I’m sitting in Music City Texas. One of the cooler venues, if not THE, coolest venue I’ve ever spoken in. I’ve got an hour to work so I’m making notes on another novel while I have time. When I get pictures of tonight’s event at Music City, I’ll post them. Right now, I’m reading reviews. This one got to me. I read stuff like this and scratch my head. My thanks to all of you who have read, are reading, or plan to read Mountain. To those of you who haven’t, aren’t, or have no plans, well…
Mountain is the best by far!! You really did a great job on this one. Wow, what an ending! This was a two day read for me and every time I recall parts of it I get goosebumps not just on the arms but down to the ankles!! Hats off to you Mr. Martin! Will be patiently awaiting the next one! One other thing you need to do a signing in Central Florida Orlando area would be good. God bless you.
Well, once again, you have delivered!!!!!!!!!!!!Outstanding book!!!!!!!!!!!! I could not wait for it to be released and I was not disappointed. Please hurry with your next book. You are now officially my favorite author.
I just finished your latest book, waiting so patiently for June 1 to get here, and always the same. I did not want it to end and yet I couldn’t wait to turn the page. LOL I don’t even have words. I couldn’t breathe at times. You write so beautiful. Who taught you to feel like that? Wrapped in Rain just about did me in. Maggie, When Crickets Cry also. I could no more pick a favorite than to tell you which of my grandchildren I loved the most. There is not an answer besides the one you are reading at the time. Thank you. I love your insight into the human spirit and the holy spirit.
I just finished reading The Mountain Between Us and enjoyed. The first book of yours I read was When Crickets Cry and was hooked on your writing style. I have read all of your books. I love the way you develop your characters, even the minor ones. There were not enough of them in this book. Of course being in the middle of nowhere would make it hard. I can’t wait for your nest book.
Charles Martin never ceases to amaze me with his descriptive imagery, twisting storylines, colorful characters, and the research he does to make his stories believable. My husband is not a reader by nature, but as of late, he is hooked on Martin’s books. We read them together outloud. I, too, hope to attend a Charles Martin book signing if he is ever in Atlanta.
I purchased The Mountain Between Us for my ‘vacation’ book..........I even ‘hid’ it so Iwould not be tempted..........oh well, guess I will have to re-read it on vacation LOL.
Once again, your imagery kept me spellbound. My first CM book was When Crickets Cry. I have read all of your books and have never been let down.
The Lord has blessed you with a special gift. Thank you for sharing His ‘gift’ with us.
God Bless
Awesome book! I just finished “Mountain Between Us” and loved, as I have loved all your books! The ending surprised me - was not expecting what happened! You have such insight into the human soul ~ I love your style of writing. I feel like I am a part of each book ~ you have a way of pulling us into the story. I hope you keep writing. I always look forward to your books. God Bless!
I pre-orderd and read “Mountain Between Us” on vacation. You are one of three of my favorite writers of fiction and I was sooo excited to read this book. I could hardly put it down, even when it was time to go do some fun things. I appreciate that your books have moral themes but I’d be interested to know why they are not overtly Christian, as your first books were. Back to my reading.... the story line was fascinating and your character development impeccable but the ending.... it left me, how shall I put it, FURIOUS! Oh, well. Guess you can’t satisfy everyone all the time.
I read The Mountain...while visiting my son on the west coast. I could not put it down. I have told other authors, friends, and students who are rushing to get it. I sat in front of the fire in the hotel in Napa and wept. as an avid reader and educator, many books give me pleasure but this book took me on a journey of life. I will reread it and savor it again because the first time I could not put it down. Even for a taste of fine wine. You are excellent at your craft and the story reads almost like a memoir. Thank you
My daughter and I have been waiting so long for the next “Charles Martin” book. I couldn’t help myself, read the book straight through. Wow, it was amazing. When Crickets Cry was my favorite, but now..... I bought each of us the book so we can have them ready when Charles comes back to Clayton, GA for signing. Soon I hope. Thanks for such an amazing and wonderful story.
Just finished The Mountain Between Us and loved it!

Great job, Charles!
“The Mountain Between Us” was awesome!! I read it in one day and could not go to bed until I knew how it was going to end. Yep, the end brought me to tears. Such a great, great book!! Enjoy your writing very much.
I was given a free copy of “The Mountain Between Us” from BookReporter with the assignment of reading then commenting on it back in June. I then left on vacation, forgetting to bring it with me so I just now have read it, and I greatly enjoyed it. I live in Utah and I hike in Utah, but only during the nice weather. I can’t imagine being up in the Unitas during the winter! I enjoyed the story , it was a page turner and quite the sweet love story. I’m glad to see you have written other books, and I’ll be reading them now also. Thank you for the free copy and I want to suggest it for my reading group:)
Hi,
I could not wait to get my hands on you book ,The Mountain Between Us, and I have just finished it. I have read all your books and this may be the best one yet. I could hardly put it down and when I got to chapter 49 I didn’t want to finsih it as wanted it to go on longer. After finishing it I just sat there and thought about it. Page 136 really hit me. I lost my fantastic husband suddenly five years ago and I still feel like I am in pieces, You described me perfectly and I am not sure I will ever be put back together again.
When I read your books I copy parts of paragraphs in them and just sit and think of them later. I call them your little gems of wisdom. That is one thing I really like about your books. Always something to think about. and this one certainly had a surprise ending. Anyway I am so thankful for your books. Please keep them coming. I will recommend this one to all my friends as I have done in the past.

Dear Charles,
I just finished reading The Mountain Between Us.....I just can’t adequately tell you what this story did for me.....for one thing it will make me rethink about marriage and work toward making it a priority. I loved how you told this story ....the present situation of Ben & Ashley and then the italicized patrs of Ben & Rachel’s life ...you are a gifted writer....
I’ve read most of your novels but Mountain is just wonderful!!
I wrote to you back in April telling you about the hell we are living when we found out our daughter was leaving her marriage. Because of your story lines I knew you would have some words of comfort for me. You did take time to write me and for that I am most grateful. You are a busy writer but you spoke some words to this mom’s broken heart. One of the best things you could have said was, “I do know that God is in the business of snatching people out of the fires they set themselves. And He’s really good at it.” Your message of hope was there for me as it comes through in the story in Mountain. You told me there is hope, lots of it.....I cling to that.
Thank you for these more than just great reads...thank you for making us think about what is REALLY important.
God bless you, Charles, and your family as you continue crafting for us....

I received The Mountain Between Us free in a book drawing. Awesome, awesome awesome. what a story...I couldn’t put it down. Can’t remember the last time I read something that had me so ingrossed. I’m planning on purchasing a few copies as gifts for my daughters and looking up his name at the library for other books the he’s written.
This is the first book I’ve read by you, Mr. Martin, and I could not put it down.
I found myself being as intense as Ben, in trying to find a solution, but your expert solutions and descriptions on “surviving” left me mesmerized.
Thank you for all your hard work. I will certainly continue to enjoy your writings.
Because of huge demands on my time, I’m very selective about what fiction I read. First, the story has to be gripping. (Check.) Second, I need to genuinely care about at least one person in the story. (Check.) Third, the pacing of the narrative needs to be just right—not zipping along at breakneck speed yet not slogging uphill, either. (Check.) Well-crafted surprise endings are always nice. (Check.) I simply couldn’t put “Mountain” down. I was actually glad that my back spasms flared up over the course of two days so that I could indulge in reading the whole book in less than 48 hours. Thanks, Charles, for an incredible survival story. Can anyone say ‘movie rights’?
Dear Charles,
I am easily old enough to be your mother - but by golly, I just achieved a life dream of my own and finished my own first book! I’s been a “Bucket List” dream always, but life got in the way for a long time. Haven’t sold the book yet, but I expect to.
I have never read one of your books before and just happened to see “The Mountain Between Us” lying on a table at the library. You can bet I will be looking for more of your books. you are a very talented word-crafter.
I love the way you describe how love can heal people. My husband and I were both shattered in horrific first marriages. We were still pretty much shattered and very wary when we first met. It took us 14 months of dating to be brave enough to commit to marriage. But we are coming up on Anniversary #19 and are more in love then ever, so I think we did something right! That’s why your description of the “shattering” and then the healing really hit me between the eyes.
WOW, I anxiously awaited this book and bought it the instant it was available. I would read at stop lights just to get to the next page. I was hooked on your writing style when I read “When Crickets Cry”, and living in Clayton, GA helped too. What an awesome GIFT the Lord has given you and he is WELL pleased with your use of these talents. Remember that Romans 8:28 says ALL things work together for GOOD.
Thank you for being faithful to your FAITH and blessing us with your GIFTS.
Thank you, Charles Martin, for a story that touched so much in me - “A Mountain Between Us”. This was the first book writen by you I’ve read; I will read the remainder. About half way thru the story I thought “is it possible Rachel, Hannah & Michael are truly gone?” No, my conscious mind would not accept that. And yet my heart went out to Ben and Ashley: such pain, such fortitude, such emotion. I finished the book in approximately 12 hours (since the age of 6 I’ve been a fast reader). I waited til morning and then reread certain sections. I think I read the last 10 pages at least 3 times. That’s how moving those words were. No, I’m not a dewy-eyed teenager or a 20/30 something hoping for a Ben to come along. I’m a 69 year old grandmother who has raised 3 children, still love them and the 2 grandsons, Henri & Ben, that they have given us. I’m fortunate to still have my husband to share our journey. Regardless of age, I hope that love, hope and faith in the human condition will remain with me. “The Mountain Between Us” has sustained and fortified my beliefs. Thank you so much.
This was the first book of yours I read and I could NOT put it down...not a good thing when a new school year had just begun and I teach full time!! After finishing it, I quickly told my mother, (who is 77 years old) about it and she went to her local library to check it out. When she requested the book, the librarian asked if she was in a book club because there were 8 others in front of her to get this title. She told her no, that her daughter had just finished reading it and knew she would love it. By the way, she did!! I promptly went back to my library and checked out and read WHEN CRICKETS CRY and WHERE THE RIVER ENDS. I even read parts of WHERE THE RIVER ENDS aloud to my husband while we were traveling, as I wiped tears and tried to compose myself enough to continue. You have a new fan!! I can hardly wait to read another one of your books.
I am a Christian and I am very selective about what I read for fun… You are definitely my new “favortie author”. :)
I have a large circle of friends who wait patiently for your books to come out. We LOVE your books. Can’t understand why they aren’t movies. I truly think Mountain would be the best movie. that was barely a 2 day read. What a good book. You simply cannot write fast enough for me. get busy:)
I was personally offended when I found out you had a manuscript rejected. I simple cannot understand that. I am sorry it hurt you.....but it hurt all your fans too.
What a gift you have.
I JUST FINISHED YOUR BOOK"MOUNTAINS BETWEEN US”....I STARTED IT YESTERDAY AND COMPLETED TODAY....WAS SAD WHEN I HAD NO MORE TO READ. AMAZING BOOK. I LOVED IT...THANKS FOR YOUR BOOKS...I AM READY FOR ANOTHER ONE. I READ ALL YOU HAVE WRITTEN. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS!
Mountain was one of the best books that I have ever read, and I read alot. I was there with Ashley and Ben, feeling the snow hit me in the face, hungry even though I had eaten. It was such a “you are there” book. I am so glad there will be a movie. I came across your books reading Chasing Fireflies and then looked for all your other ones. I only have two more left, so please get busy writing. Nicholas Sparks has been a favorite of mine, but you surpass him. Thank you for using your God given talent so others can enjoy.
How exciting that ‘Mountain’ is being made into a movie. The first book I bought of yours was Maggie, the front cover pulled me in, kind of a funny reason to purchase a novel, huh. After reading that one I was hooked, couldn’t wait to read the others, hurry and get a new one out, I need my Charles Martin fix. I’m a 71 year old great-grandmother and I am a voracious reader, thankful that cover drew me in. It’s so wonderful to find a writer that keeps it clean and knows how to touch the reader’s heart. God bless you, Mr. Martin.
