Today’s Mail

Every once and a while, I’ll get a note that strikes me as different. Something about it sets it apart. I got one yesterday. Maybe it had something to do with my third book, ‘When Crickets Cry.’ I’m not sure. Anyway, twice today I have found myself clicking on this blog—written by a lady I don’t know and have never met—and reading about a boy that’s a week old. Each time, I have heard myself saying, “Lord, can you please help this one. Please...” I realize there are countless stories like this. We each have been touched. It’s just that this one has touched me. Maybe you’re reading this because you want to know what I’m up to. Currently, I’m editing my 9th novel, but, in truth, I’m distracted. I’m thinking about Bennett. Maybe it’s the picture. If you’d like to read Bennett’s story, I don’t think his folks would mind. And, I think they’d welcome your prayers.
Teddy

Hanging in my house, is one of my favorite quotes. It’s Teddy Roosevelt. Lifted from a speech he gave in 1910. I like it for lots of reasons but, here’s the point. If you’re ever been rejected, knocked down, set back, trampled over, lost anything, lost everything, come up short or flat-out failed, then be encouraged. You’re in good company. Welcome to the human race. The question for me, and the reason this thing is hanging in my house, is not if these things will happen to me, but how will I respond when they do. Anyone can achieve mediocrity, but to dare something great, to try again, to stand back up, to dust myself off...well, that takes something else. And you can’t buy it at Wal-Mart. So, to those of you with ‘marred by dust and sweat and blood,’ my hat’s off to you.

Always lots of fun. Come see us. San Marco is one of the neatest places in Jacksonville (where I grew up) and the weather should be great.
The First Story I Ever Wrote
Posted in The Kitchen Sink on Thu, September 08, 2011
When I turned 15, I had a lot going on. Least, I thought so. Girls, academics, sports, hormones—and I had no idea what to do with any of that and I certainly didn’t know how to talk about it. I heard people say,’Express yourself.’ I’d scratch my head and think, ‘Now, just how do you do that?’ For some reason—and to this day—I’m not really sure the reason—I sat down one night and wrote a story. On the surface, that story had nothing to do with what I was dealing with. I can’t point to any part of the story and say,’Yep, that was it. That’s the thing that was bugging me.’ Maybe someday, somebody will psychoanalyze me and suggest an answer. I’m dubious. Anyway, that night started a process in me. Something I did most nights. That story, called ‘The Sandbox,’ became the first of several short stories of a collection I’ve long since called ‘River Road.’ (Stories from my childhood written between the ages of 15 and 25.) I thought maybe you’d like to see it. It follows this. One note: I first wrote this twenty-six years ago. My tendency now is to edit and rewrite to make it sound like me today. For the record, I’ve not done that. I made a few changes in my early twenties but, for the most part, you’re getting me as a teenager.

Remember that song I told you about that I’d asked a friend of mine to record??? Watch the video for a short cut of the song and a brief update on book stuff—not to mention, a look at one of my favorite t-shirts.
