Wrapped In Rain is my favorite Charles Martin book! (and I have read them all) In it he artfully depicts mental illness and captures how a hurtful past can torture the mind, body and spirit.  The characters in the book are deep, complex and real.  The raw emotion can be intense but just as the boys in the story, the reader finds shelter in Miss Ella Rain.  She is a warm blanket, a comfort, and a pillar of strength.  This is a great book that will nudge along the road of understanding forgiveness.  A MUST read.  Thank you Charles.

I recently recieved from a friend a box of books. She offered them to me knowing how I love to read, promising I’d enjoy each one. I waded through my box of new teasure and at first didn’t read Wrapped in Rain. Not because it didn’t interest me, I firmly believe He knew when I’d need to read it and held it until that time. I’ve finished, just a few moments ago, willing my fingers to leaf through pages where there were none left. For many reasons, this book, it’s contents, and what I gained from it will forever be in my heart.
Thank you for sharing your blessing with me.
    Thanks too, to Miss Ella!
May love spring up from all the rocks along your way,

I read this book in less than a week.  Anyone that has suffered pain in their childhood can relate to this story.  I learned alot about forgiving and letting go from Charles Martin’s character Tucker Rain.  It is easy to hang onto your anger but is extremely difficult to let go and let God.  God Bless you Charles Martin.  I will read more of your books.

Just finished reading Wrapped in Rain (my third CM book and my favorite, so far). I just read your online letter and just want you to know that--with this book, for me--you accomplished what you set out to do. Please keep on writing. You are quickly becoming one of my top 10 favorite writers.

About a year ago, I happened upon Wrapped In Rain at bookstore, picked it up, read the first page, and couldn’t put it down. I’ve never read a book that I identified with so much as I did with Wrapped in Rain. It touched a part of my heart that I’d closed off. It’s a work of art, and there aren’t alot of books that I love and read as much as this one. Thank you for all of your books, but especially this one.

I just met this author’s books at my local library this summer and am on my 5th one.  I have loved this beautiful story !  It brings to life so many of life’s challenges and opens one’s perspectives.  Mama Ella was truly one of God’s angels and I love the way Charles continues to use her in conversation with Tucker after her death.  I tried to put myself in their place when they took Mutt to the Catholic Church.  Heartwarming, blessed with a strong Christian foundation, and vividly descriptive in the quarry and surroundings - the cottagge out back, the barn.  I am anxious to read the latest of Charles’ books and look forward to many more.  Thank you so much.

Each story you write is incredible. I can’t put each one down but don’t want each one to end. What wonderful people and stories you create. God bless you and please keep writing.

My favorite book so far, is Wrapped in Rain, I so shared Mutt’s pain.  For one so young, you are very sensitive and your characters have such depth, that you feel you know them. Thank you for many hours of enjoyment. I never know if I want to rush to the next page or slowly savor the page I am reading.
    God Bless You!

We share a friend, Cathey F., she loaned me Maggie, and I was off and running, so to speak. We both enjoy sharing our favorite parts.

Wrapped in Rain made me think about the words and actions that come out of me daily.  Miss Ella’s “God took the time to dream me up” statement had me stop, highlight it on my kindle, and re-read it daily.  We all need to remember that we are worth so much to our heavenly Father.

IS there something wrong with the audible downlaod of this audio book it just ended with mutt saying he hit her 17 times before you walked in. and that was the end, is this really how the story ends??

Just finished my first Charles Martin book.  Went right to our local “used” book store to look for more.  What a pleasure to find an author that doesn’t have to use bad language and sex to tell a great story!

I have just now discovered Charles Martin and have fallen in love with his books!  “Wrapped in Rain” has to be one of the best reads ever!!  Slow beginning but once into it, hated for it to end.  Just wanted to chew it up, savor it, and and digest it over and over.  Have now read the “dead don’t Dance” and “Maggie”.  Great books.  Am beginning “When Crickets Cry” and my library is getting the others for me.  Thank you, Charles Martin, for making good stories based on faith for Christian readers!!

  16. Tammy Gray   on 04/29 said:

I discovered “Wrapped in Rain” at the book store when I was looking for a great story with a Christian perspective.  Once I started, I could not put the book down.  The writing style is honest and transparent about the real pain of abuse and the ripple effects it causes in the lives of everyone around the situation.  I was moved by the theology of Mama Ella and how beautifully it was depicted in this powerful work.  This is a wonderful redemptive piece with all the hope and truth of the resurrection lived out in the lives of the characters.  What a wonderful read!

Wow.  I have read all of your novels - I read a lot - I am an English person, too, and I have never been touched/changed/humbled like I have been reading your stories.  What you said in one video, that you have places that are calloused, that is so true of all of us.
Thank you for sharing yourself with us becuase I highly suspect that each of these characters is about 80% you and 20% Doss, Chase, Tucker, etc.  I just wonder how you know how it feels - things you haven’t experienced in your own life, it is astounding, really.
I have to say that as an adoptive mom, I have been waiting for a story like this - one where someone is loved unconditionally just because they are.  Miss Ella Rain so beautifully depicted this kind of love - thank you :)

I just finished Wrapped in Rain today.  Interestingly, it’s nice to read about rain in other forms, since I live in Seattle. :)

I thought this novel was outstanding on so many levels.  Brave subject matter, especially in tackling mental illness.  This was done with such elegance and grace, and yet, it was quite realistic, as well.  I don’t think I’ll soon forget Mama Ella.  I’ll be posting a recommendation on my blog, for sure.  I may only have a few readers, but they’re gonna hear about Unca Tuck and Mutt.

Thank you for writing a wonderful story which happened also to have a Christian perspective.  I know God is first, but you seemed to allow Him to speak for Himself, rather than shining a spotlight on Him.  This book is amazing to me in how God is shown not only through what Ella says, but what she does.  Similarly, evil and denial of God are shown in the lack of fruit with Rex.  These characters and story are so accessible; I’d be happy to give this recommendation to my non-believing friends, too.  Well done!

I have read most of your books and “Wrapped in Rain” is ,so far ,my favorite!  What a glorious story of forgiveness and redemption!  There is more love shown in this book than one can imagine.  I wonder if any of this came from your own life.  It just seemed so real and heartfelt.  Thank you for hours of pleasure.  I always look forward to my next Chrles Martin read!

  20. Jody   on 06/27 said:

This book was a gift from Deborah who does my hair and has become a dear friend.  She said she so loved the book she bought many copies to share and I was a lucky recipient.  I don’t know what I loved more, the unforgettable characters named so perfectly!  (Jase had to find an Unca Tuck, Mutt had to be the bastardized version of biblical Matthew until he found his exoneration), the freedom each character was given to go his own path to redemption, the gargantuan power forgiveness actually has, the sweet love that permeates the story, or the exquisite grace of prose that flies from each page.  I will now be buying many copies to pass on and share.  So many people have pain in their past, what a lovely thing to remind that life can move past that pain into God’s shining grove - if the words of love spoken by someone near are actually heard and heeded.  You have now given us all the gift of Ella.

This is the first book I ever read by Charles and it was wonderful.  The way he described his characters gives you the feeling you have met these people before.  I love your style Mr.Martin.  You are a great story teller.  I hope you write more books about Mutts character.  He was my favorite in this book.

More great stuff. At the risk of being redundant on this blog… I loved it. I agree that we would all do well to have had an Ella in our lives; certainly the world would be a better place. Funny thing: I recognized a line I recently used on my child as one Ella used on young Tucker once when he sassed her.  I’m quoting Miss Ella! So you know how memorable the characters have to be.  ;) Super novel.

Mr. Martin, I am a LOVER of your books.  I have read Chasing Fireflies, When Crickets Cry and most recently, Wrapped in Rain.  As a southerner(born in TN, live in SC now) I love how your books are steeped in southern tradition and language.  As a lover of Jesus I am taken with how I walk away from reading not feeling like my values have been compromised.  Wrapped in Rain has moved me more than you could know.  My boys are repeating(at very appropriate times) “you know how to spell love mom?
T-I-M-E!” What a gift that message has been to me as a mother of two very small boys and a wife to a man who is not far off from that:) Wrapped in Rain is written beautifully and has a message that I will keep with me forever!  Thank you and I hope and pray God keeps filling your soul with stories to tell us.

I am a voracious reader.  I read no less than 3 books a week.  I have never been inspired or motivated enough to look up the author and immediately make my book list for next week.  I could not let these characters go.  They were so real to me due to Mr. Martin’s instinctual style of story telling.  I have never finished a book and the next day wandered what the characters might be doing today.  I hope you resurrect these characters.  They and you have earned it.  Congrats!  This story needs a script treatment!  It deserves to be told on the screen!

Another book my Martin I couldn’t put down.  I’ve read The Dead Don’t Dance, Maggie, and now Wrapped in Rain.  This is the best one so far.  I’m starting Where the River Ends.  I’m a hospice worker so I’m interested from that standpoint.  But the fan of Martin in me is really looking forward to another piece of great story-telling and insight into the human psyche.  Miss Ella is my favorite character so far.  I had a friend much like her who is with the Lord now and I can still hear her whisper to me, too.  Keep on writing Charles, please don’t stop!

I reviewed this dense and remarkable novel at Amazon.com http://tinyurl.com/26sk7dp.  Rereading the review, just now, I find it says too much, one of my life-long failings, but I thing it’s well written and valid, still.  And it makes me want to read this beautiful book again.  Charles develops, as always, his themes, of love, constancy, and finding grace by helping others, all of which are very dear to my heart.  Thanks, Charles, for one of my very favorite books!

I am an avid reader, dabble a little in writing; this is by far the best book I have ever read!  Wow...I loved the storyline, how you brought us full circle from hurt to healing! The root of Mutt’s issue I never saw it coming, and I can usually figure those things out....you kept me guessing the who way ~ well I know who the root was but how or when it “broke” him I didn’t know.  Please keep writing!  Your books were introduced to me about 2 months ago - I started with When Crickets Cry....amazing....only because the library didn’t have Wrapped in Rain!! I am going to read the Dead Don’t Dance next ~ if it’s in!! God Bless You!

As an avid reader, when I started Wrapped in Rain (even though after reading your other excellent works), I was blown away.  Miss Ella was a godly soul whom you fall in love with who sacrifices herself for others.  Her kind Biblical nature in a nasty cruel environment is definitely God sent when dealing with lovable Tucker.  You have to be a very spiritual and selfless, man to write such beautiful words.  Nothing but well wishes for the most talented and inspired writer!  Keep them coming...looking forward to the next!

I have read several of Charles Martin’s books and have loved them all. I could have not until now picked a favorite. I think Wrapped in Rain is his best work that I have read so far.
There are so many things that I loved about the book. Miss Ella what can I say everyone needs a Miss Ella. A woman filled with the Holy Spirit and answered God’s call to help build the Mystical Body of Christ. “The Perfect Day”, everyone could use a few of those too. The Ice Cream Man ,brought back several memories to me I loved the Chocolate, Bannah, Chocalate Fugsicles. And also Van Halens song The Ice Cream Man.
I agree with Archie Bunkers, All in the Family’s theme song those were the days!
    Anyhow great book!  Peace! Mp

I’ve got one more of Charles’ novels to read (Maggie) and I’ll have read them all.  “Wrapped In Rain” is my personal favorite.  Miss Ella touched me with her love and faith.  Tucker is the sort of man I aspire to be - willing to do the hard things because they are right, and putting others before himself.

As with all of Charles’ books, I hated to see this one conclude.  I read on my lunch hour to clear my mind; but in several passages I had to close the book and meditate on what Miss Ella says.  Every day, I shed tears - something that us guys don’t like to do in public.  The most poignant was when Mutt partook of communion.

Would that we all had a Miss Ella Rain to encourage us and remind us how much God loves us.  I sincerely hope that Charles will write a screenplay based on this novel.  It will touch hearts, and heal some in the process.

Next month I’m ordering a Kindle and I’m going to purchase all of Charles Martin’s books and store them on my Kindle so I can read them anytime, anywhere.

  56. Campertmb   on 03/03 said:

I admit that I bought “Wrapped in Rain” in paperback at a used book store because...I liked the cover. Indeed, sometimes you can judge a book by its cover.  This novel enveloped me from start to finish. I know the setting and the people and it was incredibly convincing. I shared with my husband, two teenaged daughters and several friends, and everyone who has read it has been captivated and become flag-waving Charles Martinites. I have purchased most of his other novels, but I ration them for when I REALLY need something GOOD to read. In turn, the family has grabbed them up as well. We’ve read “When Crickets Cry,” and “The Dead Don’t Dance.” My oldest daughter gave me “The Mountain Between Us” for my birthday in December. I saved it to take on a family trip at Christmas, but my dad started reading it, so I have to get it back from him. While most Christian fiction is too preachy for me, Charles Martin’s books are more spiritual and it is very refreshing to see characters struggle with their flaws and overcome them with divine intervention. Thank you, Charles Martin! Get back to your computer, notebook, typewriter, or whatever method you use and WRITE MORE!!! My stash is dwindling.
