If you have read Where the River Ends please post your thoughts by adding a comment.
I haven’t read it yet but I am so excited to buy this! I was just looking for a good book to read an hour ago when I received your email bulletin. Can’t wait!
I never met a Charles Martin book that I didn’t love! Cannot wait to read this one!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. I thought your video was very heartfelt; that’s how I know the book is going to be equally touching.
Wow, Charles, you can really pick the themes that pack the punches! I thought WRAPPED IN RAIN was a blockbuster ... sounds as if you have another winner. Can’t wait to read this tale you have woven.
PS I couldn’t watch the video since I am hearing impaired and need closed captions but I will take Nancy’s word for it that it is beautiful.
I just ran on to your books last year and now have them all and tell everyone about them. (I have them all) I have had Where the River Ends on pre-order for a couple months now and getting anxious now to finally be able to read it. I don’t know which of your books is my favorite now but a toss up between “Wrapped in Rain” and “Chasing Fireflies”. You are a truly gifted author and hope you will continue to write for years to come.
OK, call me metro or whatever...I enjoy all of Charles’ books. Wrapped in Rain is a truly soul searching book. Not one of those that does the searching for you. It’s one that takes you to a mountain trail, points it out then leaves it up to you personally to experience it. I read this book over several days. It takes some time to digest some of the trials the characters are going through. I keep thinking I know where we are going only to be derailed by the next emotional “twist” that Charles has lured me into. After reading the book, I wondered if the author is the hero to his wife that the character was...but I think I know the answer to that question. I highly recommend this book and all of them for that matter.
I can not wait to read your new book. I have all your other 5 books at least 3 times each. I love your books and have been sharing them with all my friends. Please keep writing.....and thank you so very much.
I am my church’s librarian and have tried to get all of Charles Martin’s books in our library. His writing is wonderful and I think WRAPPED IN RAIN was great reading.
i just finished the book and was pleasantly surprised. i have not read any of mr. martins other books but this one really takes you inside the ugly disease called cancer. i support relay for life because several members of my family have died with cancer. we all could only be so blessed to find a love like doss and abbie had and to have the priviledge to love the way they did. i look forward to the next book.
I have read the new book already, through a connection at a library (non-prooofed copy) , and it is very good. Everyone who loves Charles Martin’s other books will love this one, too. I work at a bookstore and have gotten fellow employees hooked on Charles Martin. Sadly, when we opened a year ago, no one else had even heard of him. Now several of the employees are reading his books, and I recommend them to customers every chance I get! I have never read such heartfelt, emotional stories as what Charles Martin writes. I hope he keeps coming up with wonderful ideas for more books.
Charles Martin is my favorite author. I have introduced him to MANY of my friends, and am so excited to be starting WHERE THE RIVER ENDS. My favorite so far is WHEN CRICKETS CRY.
I am a typo freak, though, and am concerned about the fact that someone from the South would spell Ft. Sumter SUMPTER.
I have read all of your books. All are very good - this one, outstanding. It turned me emotions inside out!
Hi all
The publishers are running an mobile campaign for Where the River Ends, you can text River to 64888 to get a the first chapter to read on your phone. It is a free service as the publisher pays to distribute the content.

I just finished Where The River Ends. I think each book gets better. I am so glad that my friends and I were referred to Charles Martin. I have read every one so far, and each one has been better than the last.
I have emailed Oprah’s Book Club suggesting his books. They are all well written, compelling, thought provoking and inspiring.
Haven’t found another author who has touched my heart like him. Dottie in Ohio
It was great! You just keep getting better. We lost our Daddy last year to a brain tumor after only dealing with it for 4 months. The “log” said it all. I am a member of HAB & saw you last year. I want to say Thank you to Christy for allowing you to share so much with all of us. Keep up the fantastic work!
Thank you, Charles Martin, for Where The River Ends. I couldn’t put it down (really)! It was a reminder of the gift we have of each momemt, of the fraility of life and how we can give and take joy where it is found.
We have read all of your books.....Have Where The River Ends...and can’t wait to read it. We will post a comment following the read....We know it is as wonderfully compiled and written as all your previous books...Thank you for your expression of a God given talent...It spills over to others and offers hope in a sensible way.....
I was taken in by this story. When the the “C” word knocks on your door, it is an overwhelming shock which throws life into a tailspin. Most people consider the victim of the cancer. But cancer hits the whole family, especially the spouse. I learned the true meaning of “for better or for worse” as well as, “in sickness and in health.” Charles Martin truly describes this reality. In “Where the River Ends” we follow Doss Michaels as he risks all for the love of his life, cheering him on all the way to the mouth of the St. Marys River. Unlike many authors who tell us a good story, Martin has the unusual knack of showing us. Just as his main character knows how to create something beautiful with canvas and paint, Charles Martin paints a beautiful picture of unconditional love with paper and pen. This is a must read!
My daughter Missy had been trying to get me to read a Charles Martin book for months. When Where the River Ends came out, she insisted I start there since it was a story that that involved a love of mine...the St. Mary’s River. I had the pleasure of purchsing the book and meeting you at your book signing at Border’s Bookstore in Orlando the day the book was released. I couldn’t wait to begin reading. Once I started reading I couldn’t put it down...you took me for a stroll down memory lane as some of my last memories of my husband (who by the way had colon cancer and died in 1993) was a final trip on the St Mary’s river. We took out at Stokes Bridge and he was so weak he was bearly able to get the canoe up the hill to load on to our vehicle. The book was so well written and described the kind of love my husband and I had for one another. I cried a bucket of tears and then more...I didn’t want the book to end. I read it in two days and I work full time...just couldn’t put it down. Congratulations Charles...you are gifted! I’m now reading When Crickets Cry...keep up the good work. Best Wishes...Nancy
It was so nice to meet Charles today in Clayton. I’ve read all of his books, including his latest, Where the River Ends. He just consistently writes books with incredible stories, that are hard to put down (I stayed up till 2:30 one night this week because I just had to finish WTRE). More than an appealing story, is a story that speaks to the heart, that causes you to examine your own thoughts, feelings and relationships. WTRE challenges me to strive to be a wife who loves unselfishly and lavishly, knowing that how and when the end comes is only known by God and I want no regrets.
I am so sad to be missing you in Blowing Rock this week, but just got back today from a church trip to Costa Rica and must work (to keep buying books!!) for at least a couple of days.
Actually, it was truly exciting for me to take this new book on a mission trip out of the country, as my very first foray into your books was when I found “When Crickets Cry” (completely by accident) and dove into it pretty blindly during the toughest days of a month-long trip to teach nursery school in Africa. As you can imagine, that was a heart wrenching and life changing experience, and “When Crickets Cry” was a big part of working through that for me and several of my fellow volunteers who read it when I finished (and, like me, went home and purchased copies to share!!). Since then - especially being a Southerner - I have devoured (and passed along) all of your other books, and have loved each one more than the last. “Wrapped in Rain” is still probably still my favorite, although “Chasing Fireflies” was a close second. I’m really enjoying the new book as well and really loved having the opportunity to talk with my fellow travelers about your work.
A couple of the others on the Costa Rica trip suggested that I start contributing your books to our church library as a tribute to people or events, and I’m really excited about that idea! Any way to get a copy autographed - maybe by mail - without attending an “official” event??
Thanks so much to you and your family for sharing your talent, and for your great work that really shares the love of God by meeting people where they are in both the challenges and triumphs of life. I’ll continue to be an early buyer - and sharer - and will enjoy spreading the word (and your words!) with others....
Can’t wait for the next one!!
A friend introduced me to the Charles Martin books. Boy am I grateful ! I started with “Chasing Fireflies” and I could not put it down. I was laughing and crying reading the book. My children thought I had lost it. I just finished WTRE and Charles Martin has written another great story. It touched my soul because I know several people who have lost their battle with cancer. My favorite books from Mr. Martin is “The Dead Don’t Dance” and the sequel “Maggie.” I have recommended your books to my school’s book club and to many friends. Please keep writing.
I picked up “Where The River Ends” Friday night and finished it Monday. This is absolutely one of the best books I’ve ever read. One thing that make it so special is that all the places are familiar to me. I live in the Kings Ferry area and all small communities and boat ramps that are mentioned in the book are real. I have been to most all the places mentioned except Cedar Point. Even the small Mt. Horeb Baptist Church on Cooper’s Neck Road was brought into the story line. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. All of my family will be reading the book and I will certainly recommend it to many others. Also, a copy will be placed in our church library at Ephesus Baptist Church.
The story is truely touching. It gives insight to what loved ones as well as the patient go through with this terrible disease. I felt I could see the paintings Doss had painted by the vivid descriptions portrayed in the story. The way Doss and Abbie show their love through the tough times and with humor is truely amazing.
God has truely gifted Charles Martin with story telling.
First thing going into this book I was armed with Kleenex because I knew I would cry, no ,weep, for all C.M.’s books touch a chord so deep and tender that you go where it takes you and drains you and finally, fills you up. That is what I felt reading this book. Could not put it down but had to in spots because I felt so raw from all the hurting and pain that Abbie was going through. But the way Doss loved her through it all, that was really something. And I don’t think many people are strong enough to love another person like that and forget all about their needs and just concentrate on someone else. Loved the book although it was hard to read at times, but then you made Abbie laugh and I could breathe again. Keep it up. I have told my world about your books and I thank you. Like the Keith Whitley song too even though country music isn’t my thing. And looked up all the art you mentioned in the book so I knew where you were coming from. The computer age, ain’t it grand. Reading and learning. Ok, I’m done here. Better leave room for someone else!

Mr. Martin, I just finished reading your book, Where the River Ends, and immediately went to Amazon.com to see what other inspiring novels you had written. I thought your book was wonderfully written and after going to your website discovered your inspiration for the story. I, too, have had an inspiration of an amazing story that I am looking for an author to write. The setting is the early 1900’s and my great grandmother Anna (Sykora) Beckman gave birth to triplet sons in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Canada. All three died when a nurse gave medicine to the triplets that was intended for the mother. After the tragedy, Anna her husband Joseph and their other three sons moved back to Iowa where they originated. Anna ended up in the mental health institute in Independence, Iowa. Meanwhile Joseph’s brother Tony Beckman was arrested for murdering a prominent Dubuque, Iowa farmer he worked for, but was set free because of the bazaar details behind the death. To this day it is questioned whether it was a murder or a suicide. The details of the story are extremely interesting, to many to share with you here. The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reported that the Sheriff called it the most bazaar case he had ever worked. It occurred in 1940. So Jospeh was going between Dubuque to deal with his brothers imprisonment, to Independence to deal with his wife’s institutionalization. I have all of the newspaper articles of the death of the farmer and much information on Anna’s institution. I would love to have someone write a novel based on these real life stories. I have been to Canada and have homesteading records of their difficult life there. If you are unable or unwilling to tackle this project do you know of someone I could contact who might be interested. I have a lot of detailed information, but need a novelist to flesh it out. Please advise. Gratefully, Fr. David Beckman
I’ve read all your books, at first I was not sure about this novel, I found it fragmented ,,,at first. Then I started to enjoy it, you write beautifully and you do make me FEEL. What a tribute to you. I have referred you books to everyone I know. I just wrote a book review for my bank newsletter on your books. Your first book was my favorite, but Firefly’s is a close second…
Where the River Ends is beautiful. Such a beautiful love story can only be defeated by something like cancer. I only wish I could be loved like that, but at least I get to read stories that make us think that that kind of love is possible. I would love to have known Abby and Doss and to look at the when they are zoned in to each other. I, like others, laughed and cried all through this one.
I met you in the fall of 2007 at the Fernandia Beach Book Festival and my best freind, Sherba, got a picvture with you.
You have a talent that surpasses alot of writers who have hit the NY Best Seller list. Keep it up because we need more Charles Martin products.
Thanks and may Our Lord keep you and your family in His loving arms!
Charles, I met you with my mother in Clayton, GA on Saturday the 26th. We were the 7th and 8th generation Natives. I wasn’t able to read Where The River Ends until Sunday. I was absolutely enthralled. I did not put it down. My very first thought was that this would be an incredible movie. The story is so beautiful yet it is real life stuff. I will be crossing my fingers that this becomes a movie. It would be a blockbuster. It was such a pleasure to meet you.
Charles, what an incredible story of endurance and true love. I started by reading a few chapters each night but then got to a point where I couldn’t stop reading. I stayed up all night finishing the last third of the book because I couldn’t put it down. The story is so true to life. When you mentioned the areas in Georgia some of it was so familiar to me because my brother -who is now retired from the navy -lives in the Kingsbay/ St Mary’s area and I’ve visited a few times. Also, I drove from Chicago to Georgia last year and drove through some of those areas(took the back roads in). This would make an excellent movie.
I finally got my hands on my very own copy. It took me two days and ignoring most of everything going on around me and I finished it! I cried and cried and could feel his pain. She died with grace. The only thing I would have likied to felt more is their spiritual side, their were some references but I’d like to have more from Doss of Abbie. I feel you just can’t handle things of that nature without something much stronger than yourself.
I love the very detailed descriptions, I can see it in my mind and that’s one reason Mr. Martin in my favorite author. His descriptions make me hungry, smell, and be able to see it clearly.
I’m not sure I can become a river paddler though, as bad as it make me want to the snake details about did it for me.
Blessings,
Danna Fleming
The story of Abbie and Doss was wonderful and in the “Charles Martin style” I LOVE! However, I was bogged down in the details of every tree and every bend in the river and every lizard that passed by.
I just finished reading this magnificent book and still have tears in my eyes. I could not put it down. My Mother has colon cancer & is now doing fine but this just brings back memories of living through the treatments and torment they go through. It was such a wonderful love story of how her husband took care of her and the love he had for her. This is a must read for everyone.
Bought it on a Thursday. Read it on Friday, and loaned it to a family member on Sunday. Thanks once again, Charles, for writing a beautiful story and for touching my soul.
I started reading Charles Martin books a few months ago. I was hooked from the first book. I just bought and read Where the River Ends. I have a friend who is right now going through all the Chemo and Radiation that Abbie in the story went through. The cancer has now entered her brain and her bones are brittle and breaking. Though she is not as young as Abbie, the pain and suffering are as great. My friend has a wonderful husband who has been by her side for years. Though I have always known about what cancer can do, I understand their journey so much better now that I have read your story. Thank you for such a wonderful book. I read it cover to cover in a day and have already passed it on to a friend.
Have just finished this wonderful book. It rates # 1 on my all-time read list. I read approx. 2 books per week and want you to know how refreshing it is to pick up such a treasure as this. I wanted to read all night, but slowed myself down to savor every word, every descriptive phrase. Charles has an insight and depth of understanding into the very core of what love is really all about.
Please, more like this one - maybe one on the subject of Multiple Sclerosis?? Thanks you for this joy!
Sorry I missed you when you came to Pawley’s Island. I have read 4 of your other books. Mr Martin this is by far the best book you have written. For such a young man you are so wise in the way of love. Where the River Ends is a REAL tear jerker. Feb my husband and I will be married 50 years, Lord willing. My husband would do what Doss did for Abbie and vice versa. Great book, I can’t wait to see you next year. Truly, Judy Modica
I thought it was hauntingly beautiful sad and I wish there was a little more of the story it was so powerful I wanted to ebb in to a more restful area of the rive and watch him recover. I love to read good stories and to hear the words in my head to think and feel what the characters are feeling your work dose that. Thank you , write more you have lots left if you think of the great writers before you .... keep up the good work.
I just finished reading this wonderful book. A beautiful “love story”. I am a cancer survivor and know some of what Abbie experienced. I was more fortunate and survived...the love that Doss and Abbie shared was wonderful and I believe this is my favorite book yet. I have loved all of your books and have read all of them. Keep them coming...you are now and will be one of my favorite writers.
Do you think that possibly any of your books would ever be made into a movie...I would love to see both When Crickets Cry and Where the River Ends made into movies. You have style that is truly one of a kind in writing. I guess by now you know I am a huge fan....
Charles Martin is my favorite author. I accidently stumbled upon him when Amazon suggested I might like Wrapped in Rain. After reading his first novel, I have been hooked. I couldn’t put down Where the River Ends until iIcompleted it. The last few chapters were difficult for me to get through because of the tears blinding my eyes. He is a gifted writer, and his descriptive writing of each character in his books make me feel I feel like I have met them in person. I can’t wait for his next book.
My darling hubby called me from Seattle one day as he stood in a Borders Books. He wanted to make sure he was purchasing the correct book for me. I hadn’t seen him for more than a few minutes over the previous two weeks and he was going to be away for another week. I have to admit, though I longed for him to come home, the truth is that I really wanted to see him, kiss him, then delve right into my latest Charles.
I normally would have read the book in a very short few hours, but decided instead to savour every word. One chapter here, one chapter there. I finally finished it today. As I sat there sobbing, my compassionate four-year-old came over to my chair, got up and hugged me for about an hour, saying “It’s okay to cry, Mommy, it’s okay.” I explained to her the reason for my tears and in doing so felt the full weight of grief that my mind could imagine Doss must have felt. Of course this brought more tears and more comfort from my preschooler. At that moment I felt what I could imagine Abbie would feel--loved with pure, unconditional love akin to that of our Saviour’s.
Bravo, Charles. You swept me into a world of wonder and discovery yet again.
Now, if only your publisher would hire a spell-checker…
I am a huge Charles Martin books fan! My first was “When Crickets Cry” - loaned to me by a friend - and still my VERY favorite! It knocked Gone With the Wind off the top of my all-time favorites list. Have read the others as well - all are awesome. Charles, you have such a gift for making life jump from the pages of your books - you paint beautifully moving pictures in my head. This book was no different! I have a dear friend experiencing a round of Chemo for breast cancer...so the story was difficult to read at times. What a beautiful love story you have woven around such a difficult theme. Reminds me of “Love Story” but so much richer and more complex. You are so gifted! I can’t wait for the next one! Till then, I’ll continue giving away your books to friends and relatives!
I just finished reading and crying my way through Where the River Ends, and it is wonderful. I’ve read all your books, and with each one I think they just can’t get any better, oh but they do!!!!! You are truly a gifted writer. I am a public library director in a very small rural town in SC, and your books have all circulated through our town! God bless you and keep writing! Dawn Ellen
What a beautiful story of love! So poignant. I loved how the journey down the river was a symbol of Doss and Abbie’s fight with cancer: slowly they ran out of supplies just as they ran out of options when fighting the disease.
While the story was good, I was surprised to find quite a few typo errors that someone had missed. That may sound picky, but those kind of errors disrupt a story because the reader’s eye goes back and says “That’s not right. I think they mean...” Even the use of a Spanish expression was totally incorrect. I’ve read all your books and consider you a gifted writer. The nature of this story being what it was, I was dissappointed by the lack of Biblical worldview. Without being “preachy”, it seemed to me that there was an opportunity for some expressions of Biblical truth that was never forthcoming.
I agree with Ann’s comments. As I’d said above, I wish Charles’ publisher would have hired a proof reader/spell-checker.
As a Christian, I can see a powerful underlying Christian message in this novel. However, I wish it would have been more blatant.
And, frankly, I also wish there were far less references to drinking. The number of them in this particular piece was offensive to me.
But, Charles, you’re still tops in my book. hehe :)
A wonderful interesting well written book, another of my favorite novels by Charles Martin.
Charles, you have a God-given talent with the written word. Please don’t ever stop writing.
Ann—oops! You created your own “typo” when you misspelled disappointed! I am listening to the book on CD and it is wonderful! I don’t have to overlook any typo mistakes, and I get to experience the feel of the book through the voice of the reader. I do agree with the statement that Charles has a God-given gift with the written word. He is able to communicate such deep feeling with few words. Keep writing, Charles!
I just finished Where the River Ends, I told you I would send my comments when I finished. I’ve read and loved everyone of your books, couldn’t wait for the next one. I have read the comments from the readers who have just finished WTRE. for the ones who live in the area you wrote about I’m sure they enjoyed all the details of the river. But, I think you were to detailed, about all the graphic’s.. You can weave a story line, like no other author Ive read. But you dragged out more details then what you needed to. More story line on the characters would have been better. I will still buy your next book as I said, you are a fantistic writer.
Brovo Charles, you have once again peaked my imagination and emotions, looking forward to your next book.
Just finished “Where the River Ends” and while I loved, loved the story, was (as many others of you have also noted) so disappointed in—and distracted by—the poor editing that I wrote to the publisher. Mr. Martin, your fine work deserved so much better from them.
“Where the River Ends” is the first Charles Martin book that I have read. I just happened to pick it up at the library. I am so glad that it caught my eye. What amazing writing and what a touching story. I pray that if I am ever in Abbie’s shoes I will have the grace to face it as she did. I also enjoyed the art aspect of this story. There is much that I can apply to my photography. I visited Charleston and St Marys when my nephew was in the nuclear sub program. It was interesting to learn more about both areas.
I will definitely be reading Charles” other books.
In my opinion, Where the River Ends is a profound literary work. I finished reading this book in two days - couldn’t put it down except for sleep time. Underlined every profound statement. Yes, this masterpiece will break your heart! Bravo, Mr. Martin, and I can hardly wait to read your other works.
Loved, loved, loved your latest book - Where the River Ends. I think all your books are exceptional and I’m always lending them out for others to enjoy. I don’t normally cry while reading a story but, wow...............went through lots of tissue! Can’t wait for the next one!!
Like a beautiful poem or a magniicent painting your book is a work of art! What a beautiful, beautiful
book! It did for me exactly what you wanted it to do for your readers! It did what only God can do!
I thank God for your beautiful heart and the love you shared with your readers. I have also known pain
and have learned that it is only through suffering that we feel truly alive and grateful!
Please keep writing books like that! It was not only a book that touched muy heart and soul but a novel
that was so highly descriptive(what SO many writers can’t do) that one could see everything so clearly
and also learn something! Thankyou!!!!
Loved Where the River Ends. Thought it would be a chick book, but I love Steel Magnolias too. We lost my wife’s Maid of Honor 8 years ago at the age of 30. The chemo and bone marrow transplants were actually worse than the book depicts. Excellent job. This book is not just a “story”, it is literature and a realistic metaphor for life. Truly we are watched over, and He meets us where we are to bring us where He wants us to be. Keep the faith.
Strickly by chance I purchased your latest book Where The River Ends. Like your other readers, I could not put it down. I have not read your other novels but am so excited to start in on them asap. What I appreciate the most about your masterpiece is that you were able to write the entire book without giving us the graphic details of rape, sexual behaviors, (before or after marriage), and abuse. You left lots up to our own deduction without imposing on us or actually detailing every incident. Thanks so much for that. I often wonder how so many writers (popular ones of today) could be comfortable letting their spouses or most certainly, their children, read their works. I will proudly pass your book onto my young adult children . I’m sure your entire family is proud to claim you as their favorite author!
I just finished reading “Where the River Ends” while waiting for Tropical Storm Fay to leave.
A very good read that took my mind off the storm. It gave me a glimpse of what cancer patients go thru and their families and also reminded me of a good friend I lost to breast cancer 2 years ago that fought a good fight for 2 years when the Dr’s said she only had a month to live. Thank you for sharing your heart thru your words.
It is with a very heavy and sad heart that I have just completed reading all of your books. I wasn’t ready to be finished with them. I started with “Where The River Ends”. I had never read any of your books before this one. I immediately, upon finishing it, ordered all of your other books on the internet. I now have a new FAVORITE AUTHOR!! In my fifty-five years, I have read thousands of books. Never have I been touched by a book like I have yours. Thank you for bringing so much joy into my life (and LOTS of tears). You have a wonderful God-given talent. Please hurry up with your next book. Take care and GOD bless you and your family.
I just finished reading “Where the River Ends” and I can honestly say that it is the best book I have ever read. I cried like a baby. I have read all your books and love them all, especially “When Crickets Cry”, but this is my favorite. Thank-you!
You have done it again!!!! In every book I feel like I am the main character. You are truly one of the all time great authors of our day. The only bad thing is that now I have to wait on you to write another one!!!!! Charles Martin has nothing but class when he writes, enough said.
I just got done reading “Where the River Ends”. As with your other book, I couldn’t put this book down either. You have a way with your writing that makes me feel as if I’m right there. This book brought back a lot of memories of my dad who recently died of lung cancer. There were plenty of times I was found setting on my deck with your book in my hands and tears falling down my cheeks. I am happy and proud to say my dad did accept Christ before his passing. I felt sadness reading your book but I felt peace as well. This book will forever hold a special place in my heart. May the Lord continue to Bless you in your talent . God Bless.
I was just wandering through indigo trying to pass the time when I picked up your novel. I sat there reading it for two hours and when it was time to go, I couldn’t leave it behind. I finished the rest of your book in a day. I’ve always loved sad stories about ideal love, and this was perfect. Thank-you for bringing me to tears and filling me with hope.
While browsing in a bookstore, I ran across a book that said the author, Charles Martin, kneels beside his son’s beds at night. That touched me, and I purchased my first Charles Martin book that night because I wanted to read from a Christian author. I have read all of your books, and I always wait for the next one. My sister lives in Fernandina Beach, and she sent me the recent Jacksonville newspaper article about you because she and I love your books. She knew I would want to read the article. Please don’t go away from the Christian influence your books have. Don’t change your writing trying to make the best seller list. About your books, sometimes the topics are “heavy” and leave me sad. I had to put the lastest book aside several times to get my mind off the sadness. I would like to ask you to write in the same style, but make an upcoming book more lighthearted. A book should make you feel something like your books do, but I would like to feel happy while reading an upcoming book. Also, I found myself skipping over the parts that went into too much detail about every little thing and place. My mother has lost enough of her sight where she can’t read anymore, but she loves to listen to books on tape. I have tried to find tapes/CDs of your books, but I haven’t had any luck. If you haven’t recorded any of your books, you might consider doing so. I wish your book tour would bring to southern Indiana. I thank you for your books, and can’t wait for the next one. Let Christ continue to speak through your books. He will guide your success. God bless you.
I wrote an comment earlier, about Charles Martin’s books, there is no other author, besides KareKingsbury, that I enjoy reading, your comment Debbie, said how I felt so much better than I, I just had to thank you. I donot want to say anything that would take away from, or stop anyone from reading a Charles Martin book, I’m looking forward to the next one, I do hope he, is more lacks about all those little details, that was my only concern with WTRE. I’ve never been able to put the other books he written down, and when I did, I couldn’t wait to pick it up again. I was with this last book. I believe, that God does show hisself in Charles Martin’s book. I hope the next one will be out soon.
I read Where the River Ends while on a recent trip to the West Coast. What a wonderful book! I can relate to the character in the book because I had breast cancer too. How I love her husband for taking such good care of her! I have a wonderful husband who took excellent care of me too. I’m blessed.
And, all of us Charles Martin fans are waiting for the next one....I know, I know, writing is a lot longer journey, but we’ll wait.
First time I have read a book by Charles Martin.
The book was heartbreaking, a real life, and beautiful story of love.
I don’t know if in real life there is such a man, but the fiction one was great.
What we all dream about...someone who stands by us always to the end..
I couldn’t stop reading, even when you know the end when you begin the book.
GREAT BOOK!
I loved this book… I’ve read all of your books and seriously can say that the one I love best is always the one that I just read. When I started reading “Where the River Ends” I couldn’t believe I was going to spend the waning days of summer reading about a woman dying of cancer. But it was really more about living and has helped me live more fully. It usually takes me about a week to breeze through a fiction book, but this book took me three weeks. I savored it slowly and thoughtfully, as we all should good things in life… Many times I had to just put it down and reflect on the moment. Thank you for sharing your gift . Your writing and characters are unlike any that I experience in other books.
From a “River Guy”:
An amazing story of true love and drama in the outdoors… Fast moving with a southern twang and ring of possible truthfulness. Dreams for all of us who fly fish, paddle, fly biplanes, ---and most importantly, --love… We can and do find ourselves in these characters. Makes you want to get in your canoe and start another journey paddling. Enjoyed it! Looking forward to paddling the St. Mary’s.

I just finished Where the River Ends......my first Charles Martin book. I am hooked. It is the best book I have read this year! Don’t miss it.
I just finished Where the River Ends. Wow. Having read each of Charles Martin’s books, I was thrilled to find another! Wow - maybe it is too soon to comment. I am still blown away. What a beautiful book. The turn of a phrase, the flowing, readable and touching way the book is written. Details are great but not overwhelming. Thank you, Charles Martin for yet another Masterpiece! I look forward to the next!
Before seeing this novel on the shelf, my mind had no concept of Charles Martin. The story itself was beautifully told, and the characters were not only interesting, but believable. Once this book was completed, I went to find other works by Mr. Martin and read “When Crickets Cry”. It is obvious after these two books that Mr. Martin obviously lost someone near and dear to his heart, and loves the water. While I enjoyed Where The River Ends, it in no way in my mind holds a candle to When Crickets Cry. River had its moments, but was in my liking too tragic, and far too graphic for my taste. That poor girl, the amount of tragedy she had to endure just to get down the river. The nudist’s colony was a tremendously welcomed laugh, and the night with the rednecks was also a good and welcomed segment of peace, the rest of the book just kept my stomach in knots and my insides hurting. Good book, but I just can’t go back and read it again, too upsetting for me. I look forward to your other works.
I cannot tell you how much I enjoy your books. Keep them coming!
I just finished reading Where the River Ends. It was a wonderful book. It was my first novel by Charles Martin. What caught my attention was the location of the novel so I decided to give his books a try. I was born and raised in a small south Georgia town so I could relate to the location. You did a wonderful job describing the surroundings and the people. I have actually visited most of the locations you described so I could envision these as you were describing them. I enjoyed both the story line and the description of the river. It made me think of my years growing up in South Georgia. I also noticed your pod casts about writing and I plan on sharing those with my students (middle schoolers). Great descriptive writer! I can’t wait to read other books by Charles Martin.
I’ve read all his books and he’s my most favorite writer! I laugh out loud, it’s all very cute, so smart, and totally enjoyable to read. The characters are wonderfully portrayed and the stories are out of this world. I read them so fast I’m disappointed I don’t have more to read, which is why I hope he comes out with yet another book soon...he can’t write them fast enough for me. I’m in the middle of Where the River Ends, and I honestly don’t know which one so far has been my favorite, I love them all!
Thank you Charles!

I live in the area in which you have brought to life so well in your words. I can’t help but wonder if the inspiration for this story came from my friend m who lost her life to cancer. Thank you for allowing the world into this journey and into the journey’s end. It not only pays tribute to this beautiful area, but also to all the “Abbie"s and the “Doss"s who love them, and see them through to the very last breath. I can’t wait to meet you when you are in St. Marys.
Where the River Ends was my first introduction to Charles Martin...and what an amazing introduction it was! One of the few books where I have actually cried...and not just a tear or two, but al l out bawling. This is an incredibly touching and moving story. Swollen faced, I immediately went to the library to check out Fireflies...and cried all over again. Mr. Martin you are heads above other writers. I much prefer books over movie s but I would wait all night to be first in line at the premiere if either of these books were made into film.
I finished reading “Where the Rive Ends” at l A.M. this morning. It pulled me into it and just wouldn’t let me go. Everytime I read your novels I think this one is the best and it was no different with this one. I have now read all 6 of your books and am ready for another. When can all your readers expect to see another “best” on the book shelf? N.
I am an avid reader and read 2 or 3 books a week. I live on the river in the hills of Virginia, thus I picked up the book because of the title. I have read the book in two evenings and never read anything better. The twists and turns, the pain and love are all captured so beautifully! Can’t wait to indulge in your other works! Godspeed…
I commented several months ago about this book and how much I enjoyed it. Now, I feel as if I’m living the novel with a wife who has just been diagnosed with Breast Cancer herself. Operation behind us with uncertainty as to what other treatment protocol’s we will be experiencing. Oh man, I wasn’t ready for a book to come true. Now it’s my job to be like Doss and support a wife who’s world has been turned upside down. I’d say good timing on reading this book though. The intro by the author also let’s me know the husband not to be.
The novel touched my soul............
What an incredible love story. I can’t imagine how you can create such a moving book, and I pray you didn’t experience it yourself. I’ve just finished reading it, and have told at least ten people it’s a must. What a testament to love and commitment. Just marvelous! I’m looking forward to finding more of your books.
I just have one word to describe your book “Where the River Ends”.......MAGNIFICENT! Book in one hand and Kleenex in the other...thanks!
I am a physician and a writer and I thought I knew something about emotions related to death and dying but ‘When Crickets Cry’ and ‘Where the River Ends’ made me realize that my feelings were shallow. Both books should be required reading in medical school curriculums. Thank you Charles for teaching us with your brilliant works.
What a beautifully written book! A very touching story. I cannot remember the last time a Novel made me cry. Totally enjoyed it.
Sunday Nov. 9th Started reading at ten this morning and could not stop until I finished at five o’oclock My husband of 53 years even brought me a cup of tea (fear of dehydration I guess as he has never or almost never done that) Wonderful story Thank you for reminding me to love and treasure my family and others in my life and to have the courage to be there for them no matter the circumstances
From Ontario, Canada . . . my first Charles Martin read ! I have recommended it to all my friends and family and agree with Dr. John House . . . Where the River Ends should be mandatory reading in medical school ! Only a thoughful, sensitive man with integrity could write such an extraordinary book. Congratulations and thank you !!!
I just finished ---Where the River Ends. This is my first book by Charles Martin, but most certainly will not be my last. Such a story---written so well. I’ll be checking our library to see if his other books are there. Incidentally, I appreciated the lack of bad language and sex, sex, sex ---that we see in so many books written recently.
Tell me how does one so young, get the characaters to be so incredibly real.
When I read your books, these people become my friends.
Please don’t ever stop writing.
Every morning my 9 year old son and I can’t wait listen to another installment of Where the River Ends, read by Dick Estell on NPR, while driving to school… we hate it when the half hour ends… your book is captivating and beautiful. Thank you for writing it!
I am officially a fan! I picked this book up on a whim and held if for a while with passing interest. I didn’t know if I would be interested in the book or not after a few pages. However, I was drawn to it and kept reading more, until finally I couldn’t put it down. I had to make myself stop reading to feed my kids! Now I’m looking at all of the other books and will be asking for these books for Christmas. Well, actually, I don’t think I can wait that long, I’m going to have to make a trip to the bookstore myself! Awesome descriptions and heartfelt writing, I felt as if I were right there with Abbie and Doss. Charles Martin is a true craftsman of words, he made me feel for this couple as if they were close personal friends.
Wow!!! This book was amazing!!! I can’t remember the last time I read a book that moved me like this! Thank you so much! I read the nudist colony bit out loud to my husband and we laughed out loud!!!I am going to read all of your books as soon as I can. You are a very gifted writer.Sue
I started listening to this book on the radio on my to work every morning. It sucked me in. The way you made you see everything you were hearing. He only read for 30 mins in the mornings. I had to go buy the book because I had to know. I have never read a book and cried. It is the BEST book I have ever read. I have told all kind of people about it. They have the same reponse as I did. Thank you so much. I am looking forward to getting another one of your books.
Loved the book and story. Your description of the river and banks were excellent and I think added to the story. It brought back memories of fishing with my dad on various rivers in NE Florida. A very moving story.
Wonderful,great reading.Judy
Dear Charlie,
I have been reading since the “Bookmobile” pulled up outside my Elementary School in 1976.(It was this old trailer that the county converted with shelves stuffed with books. In the summer we almost died of heatstroke in that thing) Since then, I have perfected reading into an artform. I preface this with that statement ,so that you will understand one thing. Thank You.
THIS book was the BEST book I have ever read! Please continue to write just the way you do! I was sucked in and couldn’t put the book down. I laughed and cried and really felt part of their world. Reading the titles that came along with the pic to Italy and everything else about you on this site makes me really believe that YOU are one in a million. A real man!! Thank you again for this wonderful book. I will be heading out this morning to buy more of your books!!
Charles,
I met you and your wife last year at the Southern Voices Authors Conference at the Hoover Public Library. I have been meaning to write ever since I finished reading Where the River Ends. It was by far the best book I read in 2008 . It is difficult to find words to describe how wonderful it is. It touched me on many levels as I have lost both my father and my sister. Though one topic of the book is death it also teaches about love and the different ways people demonstrate love to those around them. Thanks for writing such a moving book. Best wishes for continued success.
I just finished this book. I have now read all but one of the Martin books. I love his style and subject matter. Where the River Ends was heart-breaking in so many ways. I just lost my dad to cancer. I love the part when when the main character was asked why he did what he....he simply asked the man to breathe and hold it. The truth is we all want to live. My dad wanted to live, but cancer is a sick companion that will not let you go. This was a great book. My favorite book is still Chasing Fireflies. I am getting ready to read When Crickets Cry. I loved the Dead Don’t Dance. I think I read it in about two days. I just pulled in and cannot stop. What an author! I love how he interweaves God into every book. In reality, it is all about Him!
Thank God for the adv. in the NYTimes!! There was a full-page ad for the book. That’s where I found out about “Where the River Ends” and became acquainted with the author. What a great story. I can’t think of another book that has touched me in the way this one has. My husband and I are kayakers so that made it all the more interesting for me. You even had me looking up the Guadalquivir River in Spain and looking on the map for the places Abbie & Doss went. I have to say this is one of the greatest books I’ve ever read and I’ve been on the earth for many years!! I will certainly recommend that my teenage grandkids read this one!! Blessings to you!!
This is my first Charles Martin book - however, it will not be my last. “Where the River Ends” is sweet, heart wrenching and so well written that you can almost smell the river. I wonder if that kind of love exists in this “me only” world. (don’t forget the tissues)
I didn’t know of Charles Martin--now I won’t forget. I listen to books constantly, just ask my husband, but this is the first time I’ve cared enough to look up the author. I’m 61 years young, and if I could write a wonderful book “Where the River Ends” would be it. Thank you for the content of which I will not be embarrassed to recommend to anyone. I will now look for all of your other books at the library. If they don’t have them, I will find them. Thank you again for the pleasure of your written words.
Thanks for another very good book in Where the River Ends. I ejoyed the details of the trip because it made the story somewhat less intense , not being totally focused on Abbies illness, but focusing more on their relationship.
I have never read a book that I actually cried and couldn’t stop...such a moving portrayal of the
healing of relationships! I will read every book written by Charles Martin! Thanks for such a
great time of personal reflection of life priorities!
Thank you for allowing the world into this journey and into the journey’s end. It not only pays tribute to this beautiful area, but also to all the “Abbie"s and the “Doss"s who love them, and see them through to the very last breath. I can’t wait to meet you when you are in St. Marys. geckos
How beautifully you crafted this tale of love. How I hated to see it end. Your language, emotion, insight and humor touched so many of the places in my heart. It was so real. I will be singing your praises to all that will listen. Thank you
I read and enjoyed your book Where The River Ends, but I have to say I have never seen so many typing errors in a finished product. The first couple I disregarded, but then I started folding the page corner of each one and ended up with six, plus at least two I did not mark. Who’s the proofreader??
My husband and I wanted to spend time in warmer weather after a long winter in Wisconsin. We decided on St Marys, Georgia, rented a garage apartment from two wonderful friends for the month of February. While here my friend suggested I read Where the River Ends she thought I would enjoy it because the book was about a journey along the St Marys river. This was our visit to St Marys, we had just visited some of the location you described around this beautiful area and I couldn’t wait to read it. It touched my heart in so many ways. A very good friend of ours just lost his daughter to cancer at the age of 30, while his girl friend continues to fight the same battle with cancer. Could not put your wonderfully written book down except to get more Kleenex. It is absolutely one of the best books I’ve ever read, It reminds me of the love and commitment my husband and I still have for each other after 44 years of marriage. Tomorrow I’ll be going to the book store in St Marys to purchase Where the River Ends for our good friend and When Crickets Cry for me. I also checked out your website and viewed the beautiful photos belonging to Where the River Ends.
I received Where the River Ends as a Christmas present. It was a beautiful love story and one I could relate to if you had not taken liberty with some of your descriptions for the hospital and the St. Marys River. I used to live on the river. My first husband couldn’t wait for us to find property on the river and move there where he could do his hunting and fishing and still be with his family. The river does change. Unfortunalety for my first husband and our family he was killed in an auto accident while on the way to work three months after we made the move. On the night of his death he had set me down and told me that the bloom was off the rose. He felt we had made a mistake in moving there since we had only lived there 3 months I wasn’t in the move to move again so quickly. Four years after his death I did move again near the St. George part of the river. My house was a nice brick home with a pond and room for my daughters horse and the kids still had the river to play in. I remarried a short time after moving there and my new husband of now 21 years worked with the airlines and we moved around but now we are settle in Brunswick, GA. I never really meet any of the charcters you described that lived on the river most of the people I new either worked in Jacksonville or for the Nassau county sherriff department. Also in 1992 I was disagnosis with a rare blood disorder that by 2001 had change to the worse phase of the disease. Since Mayo in Jacksonville had an expert with this rare disease we went there. By 2006 I was critical at the same time Mayo in Jacksonville had been approved to do MUD bone marrow transplant the kind I needed since no one in my family was a match. They knew my father would not be a match. So as a result I had to go to the registry for a donor. I went to Mayo Clinic at the beginning of 2006 and was excepted into the program. I was the first MUD bone marrow transplant they did and at the time the new hospital had not been built so they didn’t have nice suites for the family to stay in I don’t know if the new hospital does or not. Every nurse I met in the ONC./Hem. section of the hospital was extremely nice to me. They would come into my room and spend hours just talking to me especially if I was their only patient for that shift. I asked every nurse if they choose that department or did they get assigned there and everyone said they choose to be in the cancver portion of the hospital so I wish you had been a little kinder in your description of them. The night of my transplant all my nurse had change their shifts or came back in so they could be with me during the transplant since I had a very difficult time with the chemo. Everytime I dose off and woke back up some nurse was sitting there waiting for me to wake up they never disburbed me. I found out alot about my diesease for a mailing list sent out by the ACORG web site. They have mailing list for every cancer you could think of. Most of the nurses were surpised to find out how much I knew about my disease since it was so rare. They found a perfect donor a 10/10 match. It took some time for the marrow to start working so I was in the hospital for a good 2 months. After my released from the hospital I was given a rent free apartment donated to the program by Sears/K-Mart. I lived in the apartment for about 8 weeks. I had a mission that I was going to be home by Chirstmas day. When I reported to the clinic for my bi-weekly blood draw and came back to receive the results this was Dec 22 they told me my counts were good enough that I didn’t need to be so close to the hospital so I got to come home for Christmas. Everyone at the clinic and the hospital were extremely nice to me. I thank God for given me a wonderful niece who moved into the apartment with me to take care of me and my wonderful husband who would drive between Brunswick and Jacksonville to make sure I had a way to go to the clinic and he even learned how to flush the port. My story was not as dramatic as yours but I am alive 2 years later and have met my donor who is a wonderful person God was so good to me. I guess most people will not know that real people not rednecks live on the river in nice homes. I will say thank you for the story just hope no ones get the wrong idea about the people on the St. Mary’s river.
I’ve just started reading my first Charles Martin novel and I already want to read more of his work.
I’m not being critical just curious. Being a diehard camper since I was 2 (I’m 56) I was surprised to read about the daddy-longlegs being “one of the most poisonous spiders known to man.” As a young child I often played with them (in WV we call them “Granddaddy-longlegs"). So I Goggled - daddy longlegs - and learned there are actually 2 different ones. One kind, I hope is the one I played with, is not poisonous and is not really a spider. The other one is called a “daddy-legs spider” and is poisonous. But there is no evidence of any human poisoning and no research to show it’s venom’s potential to harm humans. FYI
I’ve read every one of your books and love your writing style. I always felt wonderfully good after finishing your first books, but “Where the River Ends” left me feeling sad and disappointed. I’m a breast cancer survivor and the graphic part about the attempted rape and description of her body left me angry and crying, and dismayed that you felt the need to put that into this beautiful story. It’s a scene I have a difficult time getting out of my mind and I wish I’d never read it. Please don’t join today’s genre of writers and feel compelled to put “shock” into your stories. They’ve all been beautiful reads through and through prior to this one.
I downloaded “When Crickets Cry” onto my Kindle (amazon.com) Saturday, February 14, 2009. Before I finished the book, I was back online downloading “Where the River Ends” , “Chasing Fireflies” and “Wrapped in Rain”. In this past week, I have finished WCC, WTRE, and am halfway through CF. Today is February 20th and I am certain I will complete CF today. Can’t wait to open each book and I try to close it and walk away so it will last longer. Haven’t been on a author chase like this Charles Martin for years. Recommending Martin’s books to everyone I see. My 86 year old mother is getting ready for WCC. PLEASE, Please don’t stop writing Mr. Martin. You have a gift that leaves the reader continuing to think about the story and characters as if they were real life acquaintances. In these tough times, it is nice to go away from current affairs into a vivid world of emotions and find oneself drifting from one story to another instead of dwelling on our current world of crisis. Thank you! Thank you ever so much.-Kathryn, Huntington, WV
Good theme, but the language was pretty earthy. I have become used to that since the first book of yours that I read, When Crickets Cry. But this one seemed to go outer limits. I have been a nurse taking care of cancer patients, and it is not pretty. But the numerous vulgarities plus the disappointing “fall from grace” kissing description in the elevator left me a little depressed. I also kind of had a flashback remembrance of Love Story -"love means never having to say you’re sorry” in Abbie’s refusal to acknowledge anything her husband did could hurt her -"no scars.” Would have liked to have seen forgiveness occur between husband and wife-admit hurts, then extend forgiveness. Ditto with Abbie and her father-how very tragic.
Where the River Ends was the first of your books that I read. Since then I have purchased the other 5 and can’t read fast enough. I love the story telling and the detail. I also can’t get enough of the humor. As sad as Where the River Ends can be, it also lifted my spirits to read about such a caring and devoted couple. They could have just waited for the end to come, but insted chose to go their own way and have NO regrets. Wow, I wish I could do that. Thanks for your unique voice, and I can’t wait to read more in the future!
Truth is, I’m not really a book reader, but I think I need to read this one
I’m on a Charles Martin “kick”. I’ve read the Dead Don’t Dance and Chasing Fireflies so far. A review of your new book Where the River Ends sparked my interest, so I just ran with the interest. I have not been disappointed!! At the moment I have 3 more of your books on hold at the library. You have a gift for touching hearts and for real, down -to-earth characters. Thank you so much.
Peg
My in laws gave my husband Where the River Ends for Christmas, he was already in several books so I picked it up. A very touching story and I was surprised at the ending. I didn’t have faith for it! I went on to read When Crickets Cry, The Dead Don’t Dance and then Maggie. All very good books but more violent than I expected. I am a little curious why your female characters seem to be always violated in some way, either abused or sick. Just wondering. I also wonder if you and your wife are as intuitive as the couples in your stories. As ML’Engle would say kithing tends to be a normal part of their lives.
I do love that you stuck it out and kept true to your dream of writing, you have given us a gift in your books.
Hi. I Live in Jacksonville and recently acquired a copy of the St. Mary’s magazine with the article about this book. It made me want to read the book, so I have chosen it for my book club to read. I hope we all enjoy it, and I’ll let you know what everyone thinks when we are done reading it!
Charles, just finished Where the River Ends.. wonderful writing. This is my favorite book of yours so far. I hope you are making this into a movie. It would be awesome..I can picture the setting now. Keep up the great work. Can’t wait for the next one.
Oh my goodness! I just finished Where the River Ends and I am just blown away with your writing!! This book has to make it to the movies! You are such an awesome writer - I’m so glad that I stumbled on your work at the library after finished all of Nicholas Sparks books! Can’t wait for your next one!
Charles Martin is by far one of the best authors I’ve ever read! A friend introduced me to him about 3 months ago about the same time another friend introduced me to another author who is supposed to be the hot new talent. Almost all of her books make the NY Times best-selling list, but I’ve got a couple of words for them: CHARLES MARTIN. In the past 3 months, I have read about 4 of her books and 4 of Charles’. There is no comparison! She is an excellent writer, but Charles sets the bar. I read Chasing Fireflies and was hooked. Then I read The Dead Don’t Dance, and fell in love with Dylan and Maggie. Next I read Maggie, which I thought would prove to be my favorite book of all times, and then I read Where the River Ends. Now, I can’t choose between the two.
I am about to start When Crickets Cry and have already been warned that it may make my first choice decision even tougher. I can’t wait to read the rest of his books, but, at the same time, I dread reading the last one, because I won’t have anything to read until his new book comes out next spring.
I grew up crabbing and skiing in the intracoastal waterways of Georgia and canoeing on the Ogeechee River. Nobody can describe the river’s hold on you, the matching of its rhythm to your heartbeat the way Charles does unless you’ve been there and experienced it, unless it runs in your veins. And nobody can express the kind of love Charles’ characters share unless that same kind of love is painted into their own relationships.
What is amazing to me is that Charles is so young. He is just a few years older than my son, but his insight and wisdom are that of an older, more seasoned man. I would love to read an autobiography to see where he gained all of this wisdom and insight. That level of depth usually only comes from painful experience.
I also hope he continues the Maggie and Dylan series. I could read about them for the rest of my life!
I just posted this message on my Facebook page....."Mom said it was the devil in the bottle, but I don’t think you drink meanness. You can try and drown it, but, in my experience, it’s a pretty good swimmer.” A line from the prologue of ‘Where the River Ends’, by Charles Martin and it is one of the best novels I have ever had the pleasure of reading. A box of Kleenex and an afternoon later, I have enjoyed one of the best love stories ever written. Thank you Mr Martin!
And I promise that I have never referred to one of my oncology patients as “Room 123”.
I forgot to add that this too was my first Charles Martin book and I cannot wait to read his other works.
Loved the book, simply loved it

Just read “Where the River Ends” and loved it, although tragic and sad. Enjoyed reading about the St. Mary’s River as I have paddled it from Moniac to Scott’s Landing beyond US 1 with some friends for a week and could identify with some of it. This is a really beautiful river and did not remember that much trash on it. Remember at Stokes Bridge people gathered there drinking, but not swimming as when I went it was in February but not too cold.
Good book and would recommend it to anyone and especially if you paddle, a river is like life, you never know what will happen around the next bend. Success is the journey not the destination.
What a wonderful book! It’s great to read a well written book that affirms the values of love, fidelity and being immersed in the power and glory of the natural world.
This book was great, sad but great. Being an avid paddler and have paddled the St. Mary’s from Moniac to Scott’s Landing, the river was described very accurately although did not see as much trash. It really held my interest and could not put it down when I started it. It was bought for my wife, but I read it before her.
I have just finished Wrapped in Rain...It was outstanding and brilliantly presented...Thank you for your talent which you share with your writing...We are anxious to read your new book in the spring regarding the episode in Utah.....
Just finished reading “Where the River Ends”. I am trying not to cry. After reading Mr. Martin’s books, I have a new understanding of “a river”. Though the book was hard to read because of all of the emotions, it was worth it. Mr. Martin has a wonderful way with a story and words. Mr. Martin paints a story that steals your breath away, just as Abbie and Doss breathes in the paintings in their year long trip.
I just finished Where the river ends and I loved it! My four year old kept coming up to me and giving me a worried look because I had tears streaming down my face. I have read Chasing Firelies which reminded me of my childhood visiting my Grandpa in Illinois and putting those bugs in a jar to watch them light up over and over again. I just opened When Crickets cry and I can’t wait to get started. I have found my new favorite Author. Thank you for the wonderful books!
I’m only on chapter 10, but I am already in love with the story and characters. You have an incredibly beautiful way of writing...one can’t help but feel such a strong connection--and I still have the majority of the book to go! I just wanted to tell you that I love your writing style, and to thank you for telling what is so far a beautiful story. You notice and relay details and emotions in an amazing way.
I am a primary school teacher in Tifton, Georgia. I often search for awesome “summer” reads but am very careful to choose books that have Christian values and references. I have read all of the books written by Charles Martin except “Where the River Ends” which I will purchase as soon as possible. I have found great pleasure in every book that I have read and can relate in some way to most of the characters. I am currently reading “Wrapped in Rain” , and I am loving it. It’s hard to put down just as all of the other books.
I loved reading this story.... Abbie showed no fear of death, helping others remember the way she lived, not died. She reminds me so much of my friend, Trish. Trish fought cancer until she couldn’t speak, walk, or anything. The only thing she could do was love. Somehow cancer changes your view of life, and the purpose. Books like this one leave me wishing i had my friend back.
I have read all of your books now. This is the best book yet. The cover says this book will break your heart. And it did. I have not read a love story this powerful in a long time. I hope it becomes as popular of Love Story did. I am telling everyone I know to read this book so it can make it on the best seller list!
I just finished your book (that I started yesterday). I am so completely moved. I took care of my mother for the last 5 weeks of her life while she battled ovarian cancer. She was also a 28 year breast cancer survivor. Your book brought it all back and fixed some things that I have struggled with for a long time., not just with my mother, but with myself as well. Thank you. Thank you.
Just finished this book. It was a “can’t put it down”. You seem to write from experience.I found out my mom had terminal cancer in Jan. of 98. In March of 98 I moved back in with her to take care of her during her illiness. She died in Nov of 98.She elected to do the hospice thing but I know about giving the pain meds, the chemo sessions and such. Her body was too frail to do the chemo, but she bravely tried any and all experiemental things her doctors would come up with.I know first hand about caring for one with this disease...and as I said you seem to write from experience. AWSOME BOOK
Just finished reading yours book. And they were the best story ever… i love everything that you’ve noted down… its an inspiration to all.. Great work!!
I have read several if not all of the books by Charles Martin. I noticed a change in this one. I was wondering why the new publisher. I am the director of a church library and have all I have read in my collection. I was disappointed because of due to the content and omission of God I won’t be able to have this one available. I still enjoyed the writting style and quality.
I just finished this book and loved it! My experience with the book was intensified when I watched So You Think You Can Dance on Fox tonight. Melissa and Ade performed a dance that the choreographer based on the emotions of breast cancer. The dance put the emotions of this book into motion, I would recommend that anyone who loved this book, try to find that dance and watch it. It brought tears to my eyes all over again. This was my first Charles Martin book but will not be my last.
One of the best books I read this summer. I read a lot and can’t wait to share this book with friends. I hated for it to end. I am making my husband read this one!
I had not known Charles Martin’s books until I bought “Where The River Ends.” I have found my new favorite author. The way he tells a story captures your attention. Since I live in Northeast Florida, I loved the description of the river...you could feel yourself there on the adventure with Doss and Abbie.
What joy, laughter, sadness, and tears you experience as you turn the pages of this awesome book. I will be going to the bookstore tomorrow to buy my next Charles Martin book. Thank you, Charles Martin, for a book that was not filled with bad language!
I went to the library looking for a good book to read, and judging a book by its cover, picked up “Where the River Ends,” read the inside of the cover and checked it out. I laughed and cried through the whole book and can’t wait to read the others by Charles Martin.
Most comments for “Where the River Ends”—I certainly didn’t read them all—seem to be full of praise; well, I, for one, was more than mildly disappointed. It appears as if the publisher and editor told Charles Martin to “jazz it up a bit.” “Today’s readers want stronger language, more vivid scenes of nude bodies, intimacy, and—Charles, can you throw in a rape scene? That really titillates and excites people.” Martin here writes for the mass market, people who cannot understand subtleties or the finer points of communication. John Grisham started out good and degenerated into trash with his last book; I hate to see that happening with Charles Martin. And yes, I have read all Martin’s previous books and recommended them highly. With “River,” I will be very selective about pushing it.
I have no intention to return and read these comments. Rail at me all you like, I will never see them.
All I can say about Where the River Ends is that you had to have loved like that to have written that book. No one who hasn’t could have gotten the emotions out as you did. It has become my all-time favorite love story! Thank you. Take a deep breath....hold it.....THAT’S why!
I was looking for a book to read on vacation and the name Charles Martin caught my eye because that is my father’s name. I picked up the book “Where the River Ends” and knew I had to read it because my dad was facinated by the river in our town, in which he had lived on the banks almost all of his life.
He worked on tow boats for a relative during high school. Then I checked for other titles by you and found that one of them had Cricket in the title and my mother’s nickname is Cricket. So may coincidents is uncanny. But most of all, I loved the book and will be reading the others soon!

At a Book Fair in Columbia SC a few years ago, you gave me a copy of Chasing Fireflies, and I have been hooked ever since. Where the River Ends was the most moving, most memorable novel I have read in my life (and I usually read 100 books a year). Eagerly awaiting The Mountain Between Us. ;)
Just finished “Where the River Ends,” & loved it. I came upon your book by chance at a Costco in CA. Totally bought on impulse & am very glad that I did. Thank you for sharing your talent with those who have been impressed by your works. My husband & I just visited Charleston last yr. for the first time. It did take me back - the many references to that location. Losing a spouse to cancer has got to be one of the hardest things any of us could face. You made it so real, it was like it was a non-fiction novel. Clearly you did your homework. Thanks again.
Last night, I finished reading “Where the River Ends.” And I want to know how the author got IT so RIGHT! Even your posting of the “Dear Reader” letter describing a woman whose husband served divorce papers in the hospital doesn’t explain how you were able to portray the TRUTH.
I watched my sister die from metastatic breast cancer at the age of 37, with her husband beside her, caring for her, trying to retain hope, during every treatment and every turn. I experienced the care of my husband during my treatment for breast cancer, including prophylactic bilateral mastectomies, 6 months of chemo, and all the struggles to know what was the best or right course to follow. I am now a 10-year survivor (!!), but during those first 5 years, I did not expect to live, given the high mortality rate of women in my extended family, dying from breast or ovarian cancer.
Since I didn’t expect to live, we really pushed boundaries (for us anyway) on doing things and having experiences to fulfill dreams (seeing all figure skating events at the 2002 Winter Olympics) and to make memories (seeing Paul McCartney in concert, among other things). I also pushed hard in my work, since I have no kids, so that I felt like I’d had an impact on the direction of my chosen profession. At the 5 year mark, I celebrated by buying a convertible—which was always more of a fantasy than a dream or a wish. On the advice of my oncologist, my license plate reads “QURED.”
..... And every day I suffer survivor guilt because I’m here and my sister isn’t.
EVERY EVERY EVERY MOMENT IS IMPORTANT! And your story of Abbie and Doss soooooo captures this truth and all the love this truth requires.
Thank you for getting it right.
It’s been a long time since I have sobbed at the end of a novel. I picked up “Where The River Ends” at the supermarket while on vacation. I never expected to experience so many emotions. I loved and hated Doss for his recklessness at endangering Abbie when she was so frail and for loving her so deeply that he risked everything for her. I loved and hated Abbie for making Doss keep his promise for the trip down the river and for having faith in him for following it through. I loved and hated the trip for, of all places that she could pick to finish her days why did she pick this God forsaken risky river and for the spirituality and devotion the river gave to them. They were commited to the battle, the river each other and living. As much as I wanted it put the book down (or throw it down) I was riveted to it. Charles Martin I will see you again in the pages of which ever of your next novels I pick up.
Mr. Martin,
I had just finished “Where The River Ends” when my sister at 65 passed away suddenly. At 15 she crossed the St Marys river into Folkston to get married. In many ways her life was akin to the river. In giving her eulogy, I used the analogy of the river to give comfort to her 3 daughters and her eight siblings. Using your “Gus’s” words I hope they know that she, as St Marys, will never end and they can see her brought back to them in many ways every day. Call it providence...but the lovely words in your book came when I and my family needed them most. Thank you.
I’v just finished your book, Where the River Ends. You pulled at my heartstrings so much. My husband died last year from a long bout of cancer. We have fished, camped, and taught our boys to ski in the St. Mary’s over the past 35 plus years. years. We have put in at the Boys Scout Camp, Stokes Bridge, St. George, Trades Hill , Scotts, White Oak, and US # 17 many times. Saw the “nudists” also !! Still go to the “Shack By the Track” for ice cream !! Your account of the river and a spouse dealing with the loss of a loved one due to cancer was right on the money. I met your wife briefly this summer. While kyaking Kingsley Lake with Julie Smith...who knows Cindy Harvey thru church, we met them on a dock. Thanks for a beautiful read !!! God Bless.
I enjoyed the book, bought it on a whim at a Sam’s Club or Costco. I wished the book had more storyline and less description of the river, for me that got to be a little too much, I found myself actually skipping pages while he was talking about the river and the trees.
My husband of 53 years even brought me a cup of tea (fear of dehydration I guess as he has never or almost never done that) Wonderful story Thank you for reminding me to love and treasure my family and others in my life and to have the courage to be there for them no matter the circumstances
You are one of my VERY favorite authors! I just finished reading “Where The River Ends” and noticed 3 errors. One is where the word “mind” should have been “mine,” as an example. You also have an error on your home page. I will volunteer to proof your next book, if interested! Keep those books coming!
I recently read Where The River Ends just by chance (looking for something to read) and loved it. Been passing it to all my friends. Started reading all your books I can find!! Love them!! Keep them coming. Thanks.
This book is unbelievably touching and realistic. Martins descriptions are unmatched and the strength with which he connects you to the characters is truly lasting. I was fixated until the last word, and haunted still to this day. Well done, Martin.
Just finished “Where the River Ends” and simply loved it. I have read all of your other books and am desperately awaiting a new one. Is there one on the way? I first read “When Crickets Cry” and was a definite fan from then on. I slowly made my way through the rest, ending with “Where the River Ends”. The characters in your books become family. Thanks so much.
Charles,
Just finished reading “Where the River Ends” as I was waiting to meet with my oncologist at M. D. Anderson to get results from my latest scans. I have been battling cancer for 5 years - 6 surgeries, 2 rounds of chemo and 2 rounds of radiation, As I finished the book, I thought this man has been there. You very accurately described the “hell” of cancer. Your book was good therapy for me—I laughed, I cried and I delighted in such a love. I, too, have that type of love from my husband—who has been and continues to be my rock through it all. Thank you for reminding me how blessed I am - I’m alive.
I just finished Where the River Ends and I loved it. What a wonderful, touching love story. It was hard to put the book down in order to do the other things that I need to do in life.
Where the River Ends touched my heart and pulled up so many memories I thought I had burried. I spent two years taking care of and loving my husband who had a terrible rare disease that took his life. I would have done just as Doss did for Abbie. In fact, I took him everywhere he wanted to go especially hunting. My mother grew up in the country out from Folkston and all the places along the St. Mary’s River seemed like long lost friends that she frequently remembered and talked about. Thank you for sharing your gift. When Crickets Cry was also heart breaking and heart warming.
I just finished reading ‘Where The River Ends’, and it was beautiful beyond words.
No offense, Charles, but that a man could write something so emotional blew me way.
The love Doss had for Abbie, and she for him, it was something you don’t see anymore.
They were real for me, and by the end, I was practically falling off the couch, urging them to make it, hoping, somehow, she would survive, but knowing she couldn’t, and still wanting the promise to be fulfilled, for all of us. Then, that the Senator could come around, and be transformed in a way only Abbie could’ve arranged, was wonderful to see.
This is a book I will definitely LOAN out, as I want it back, but I think it’s a story that should be shared. They should make a movie out of it..no, never mind that; Hollywood could never do the story justice.
Thank you for sharing this part of yourself with all of us
I was mesmerized by this book. I laughed, I cried (a lot). Found it difficult to read at times, would put it down for a while, then start again. It was a fabulous story. I recently lost a sister to breast cancer in January 2009. Abbie reminded me of her. A very strong woman with a beautiful, loving heart. I look forward to reading your other novels.
I just read this book. I couldn’t put it down. I especially enjoyed the intertwining of the the time frames. The front cover contains the words: “Warning: This book will break your heart.” That’s quite accurate. I loved it and loved their devotion to each other. I also liked the eventual acceptance of Doss by Abbie’s father. That really wrapped up the story nicely.
Too good for even words to describe. I was afraid the subject would be too difficult for me to handle but it turned out that it helped me deal with my fears by knowing I was not alone and there was hope and life after a diagnosis.
Just finished reading “Where The River Ends”. I just found Charles Martin by chance at my local library a few short weeks ago. That first book I found - “Chasing Fireflies” made me laugh, cry, think and marvel - again! - at God. For someone who never remembers an authors name, I have remembered Charles Martin. My library has ordered all his books that they do not normally carry and they are reserved for me! I’m an avid reader and will buy several of these books to keep and read over and over. “River” was a good book but not my favorite - perhaps because we are all afraid that someday we may have to personally follow in the footsteps of the people in this book. I have told all my friends to read “Chasing Fireflies” and “Wrapped in Rain”. These two books are the best I have read in a long, long time. Thank you for writing - You are blessed!
I totaly agree with your point here! I admire the stuff you post and the quality information you offer in your blog! Keep up the awesome work dude.

Never before in my life have I read a book that penetrated my heart as deeply as Where The River Ends has. In a world where it is not possible to put into words what “love” truely is, you have done it. If there were one book I would say noone should go without reading, it would be this one...Simply because what is a life without knowing a love like this and accepting that..Yes, it does exist.
Thank you for touching the deepest part of me. It shall not be forgotten.
I’ve never paddled a canoe or had the experience of facing cancer, but reading Where the River Ends, made me feel as if I’ve experienced both. No other author does visual pictures the way you do. Thank you for writing a story of a man who stays and loves so deeply despite all. Just the kind of love we all long for!
Keep writing! Dana
what a great book… i just finished reading the book in Polish… touched me very deeply… story about life-love-death-dreams… true LIFE
The first book I read by you was Where the River Ends. I thought I would just die on the spot. I live in Brantley County, Georgia, right at the Satilla River (Nahunta) and I could not lay the book down. I rushed to the Library to check out any other of your books and to date have read all of them - passed them to all my friends. When I check them out of the library, I hold them until all my family & friends have a chance to read them. Such a great, great author. I wish sometimes I had never read any of them so I could start all over and read them again and again. Hurry ! give me another book.! Dale Halligan
This book has been the best thing I’ve read for a long time. I am 67 years old and am known as an avid reader. I live in New Brunswick, Canada and just got the book, I could’nt put it down. The words in it took me to a place I’ve always wanted to see. Thank-you.
This was one of the most wonderful novels I have read in quite some time. Beautifully written and so compelling I really couldn’t put it down. I will definitely look into your other work Mr. Martin.
I didn’t have as much trouble believing the canoe trip as I did believing there was a man like Doss Michaels. Where can I find him?
I have read this book, and I am in awe of the kind of love shown and described in this book. I have always thought the word awesome was overused, but I believe it says all that I can say about this book. I have loved all five of the books that I have read, and I will continue to read the books you write. There are very few books that compare to those that you have written. I am so thankful to our church librarian for putting these in my hands and insisting that they be purchased for the city library also. Thank you---thank you---thank you---keep writing…
My dad gave me this book, said I’d really enjoy it. Now understand, I NEVER read books. So on a Friday evening, both kids were gone and the house was quiet. I decided to pick up “where the river ends” and try to start reading it. Yep, you guessed it. I absolutely loved it. It took me until the following Tuesday to finish, which by the way is record time for me, but I did finish it. I’m really glad I did not finish this book on the bus however, because I was literally crying so hard that I could not see. Within the last 10 pages of the book, I sobbed 3 different times. (Don’t be discouraged, this is happy crying). What a wonderful story about how 2 people LOVE each other. Now I can’t wait to read all the other books written by Charles Martin. Thank you for helping me understand the joy of reading.
I just finished reading Where the River Ends. It’s one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. I"m already a fan of Charles Martin, having read all of his releases except Maggie, some more than once. This one definitely tops the list.
